For nearly 50 hours, five neurosurgeons and around 100 nurses were working separating Craniopagus conjoined twins Ladan and Laleh Bijani. Ladan died during surgery, Laleh survived for 90 minutes and died.

Australia: May 2001
Bethany Nolan, who was born with no kidneys and bladder, did not survive an emergency operation to separate her from her sister, Alyssa, at a hospital in Australia.

Brazil: December 2000
Diogo and Diego, had to get operation to separate in 10 days after they were born. The doctors said that they first would try to save both children but eventually one of them probably would have to be sacrificed to save the life of the other.

UK: November 2000
British judge ruled that the two-week-old Siamese twins -- given the pseudonyms Jodie and Mary -- should be separated from each other, even though one of the girls will die in the process.

Thailand: March 1994
Doctors in Thailand embarked on a 20 hour operation to separate 15 year old conjoined Siamese twins Pim and Ploy. Pim survived after enduring a 35 hour medically induced coma but Ploy died.
