Mother’s day is just around the corner, and what better way to usher it in, than with a movie reminding you of how a mother’s love knows no bounds. Next month, GSC movies will be bringing you the most highly-anticipated Malaysian Movie this year. This new movie will tug on your heartstrings and make you just want to hug your mummy. More than just another family movie, You Mean the World to Me, a must-watch movie adapted from an award winning play by the name of Hai Ki Xin Lor, it is an Asian movie that is almost completely filmed in Penangite Hokkien, the first of its kind.

Produced by Astro Shaw, You Mean the World to Me is a semi-autobiographical film inspired by the experiences of Director Saw Teong Hin growing up on the streets of Penang. Best known for his work with the Malay Language epic Puteri Gunung Ledang, Saw wrote the script for the new movie in 2009, but due to lack of funds, turned it into a stage play that premiered at the 2014 George Town Festival to critical acclaim. Now, 8 years after the script was first written, it will be turned into a movie, and a must-watch movie it is.

The movie revolves around a Penang-born filmmaker, Sunny (played by Frederick Lee), who returns home to make an autobiographical film about his dysfunctional family, all without their knowledge or approval. Sunny is forced to confront and relive his past and his childhood, as old wounds are reopened, and shocking incidents of the past are revealed, we see how he grew to resent his mother (Neo Swee Lin) and his older, mentally-challenged brother Boy (John Tan). His film begins to turn into a cathartic exercise, allowing him to exorcise his anger and guilt towards his family. He eventually learns that true love is about sacrifice.
